What Makes Writing Such a Challenge and Also So Much Fun! – By Adite Banerjie
I was once asked: If you weren’t a writer what would you be? I was well and truly stumped. I have thought long and hard about this question and have really not been able to come up with an alternative career that I would be equipped to handle or enjoy as much. (Oh well, perhaps there is one—that of a dog trainer.) My writing career started soon after I left college and got into journalism. But while I have changed tracks—from fact to fiction—writing has remained at the heart of all that I do.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not just about sticking to my comfort zone. In fact it’s the other way round—writing continues to challenge me every single day. There are days when it seems impossible to string together a proper sentence. And then there are others when the words seem to fly off the keyboard, and I can hardly keep pace. There are times when I am like a demented maniac hating every word that I have put on paper, deleting huge chunks of work that I had done the previous day, just because it doesn’t seem right any more. I can’t think of any other career that would pose such challenges on a day to day level.
Take, for example, my decision to write a romantic thriller. This was going to be my third book (No Safe Zone) and I had written two romance books (The Indian Tycoon’s Marriage Deal & Trouble Has a New Name) before that. I have read enough and more thrillers to know that I would need to end every chapter on a cliff-hanger to keep readers turning the pages. And the romantic thread would have to be woven into the plot. So, how hard could it be? But theory and practice are two different stories altogether. Even as I worked on the manuscript I continued to go back and forth, edit and rewrite, trying to get the pacing right without losing the plot. Believe me, I was sweating it out every day. And there were plenty of times that I nearly gave up the struggle!
So where is the ‘enjoyment’ in all this struggle, you might ask. When things are going your way, it is pure magic. There are those amazing moments when you can feel it in your bones that there can be nothing more sublime than writing. Doubts disappear much like dark clouds being chased away by sunshine. Your belief in yourself is restored. And when, after the rewriting, it all comes together, you know you wouldn’t have it any other way.
So, whatever you do, hang in there, believe in yourself and brush up on your craft as much as possible.
You never know what your next writing challenge will be and it pays to be prepared—or as much as you can be before you pack your bags and set sail on yet another adventure. Happy Writing, folks!
