I Can’t See A Day When I Haven’t Written Anything – Debeshi Gooptu

Share.

Who is Debeshi Gooptu?

I work as a digital content strategy for one of the leading digital marketing firms in NCR. In addition, I edit an online publication on technology and innovation so there is no escape from writing. Literally.

Why do you write?

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. As a child, my favourite toy was my father’s Remington typewriter. I wrote my first story, a murder mystery (inspired by Agatha Christie), neatly typewritten and stapled, complete with illustrations when I was around 11 or 12 years old. I still have that book safely stored somewhere in my collection.

Looking back, I can’t see a day when I haven’t written something or the other. A short story, a poem, an essay. A career as a business journalist was an inevitable extension of my love for writing. I have several day jobs but all of them involve writing and working with content so let’s just say that I write for a living!

How did the journey towards becoming an author begin?

Well, it all started with a blog that I began writing titled The Gurgaon Diaries! nearly five years ago. The blog dealt with my experiences living and working in the Millennium City and finding humour in mundane, everyday situations. The blog got noticed, people started reading and liking my regular updates and were able to relate with what I was writing about. There were many requests for a book.

In 2015, I curated some of my favourite pieces from the blog and self published an e-book through the Amazon Kindle Select program. Becoming an Indie publisher added another dimension to what I was doing and I knew I was on the right track. The e-book was quite successful and I decided to write another book. Juggernaut Books loved the idea and Dragon Aunty Returns saw the light of day!

About the book

A Bengali woman meets a Punjabi mirchi in a swanky residential complex of Gurgaon. Mrinalini can’t tolerate the boisterous Punjabi dragon. The only problem is, they become friends. How long will this adventurous friendship survive?

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I have never had to deal with Writer’s block thankfully. My brains are always buzzing with ideas and once my work is done, I settle down to get all of these thoughts down on paper. But that only happens at night.

Debeshi’s favourite books and authors

I read like a maniac but I must confess that I am an obsessive crime fiction junkie. Authors such as Ian Rankin, Keigo Higashino, Ruth Rendell, Mark Billingham are my favourites. Then, there’s humour. I could go on all day!

Your advice for aspiring authors

Nowadays, it’s not just about writing a book. One has to put a lot of effort into promoting and marketing the book as well. So a writer has to be an extremely “social” creature. Having

Having self published my first book, I would say self publishing is a good way to get started. However, one must make sure that the book is edited properly and reads well.

Don’t put anything and everything out there, just because you can!
