Words of Wisdom from a very seasoned blogger, Shailaja Vishwanath. Know the reasons behind successful blogs and their origin.

People ask me why I blog.

If you are a blogger or a writer, then the answer wouldn�t really surprise you. Like countless others, I blog/write because I believe I have something to say. What makes it even more rewarding is when the work resonates with readers and they reach out to you with a feeling of kinship.

Writing breaks down barriers, in far easier ways than wars, invading enemy territory or open aggression have ever done. What began as a simple diary to catalogue my experiences with my child has now turned into an avenue for me to share life lessons that I learn from her instead. My first blog, Diary of a Doting Mom, is not your typical parenting blog. It has very few DIY posts, a smattering of ideas for things to do with your kids, maybe six reviews on books that your kids would enjoy and hardly anything on food habits, diapers, how to manage illness and how to potty train your child.

What it does have, however, is a series of introspective posts on how to yell less at your child, how we need to slow down and smell the roses in life, how we can find inspiration in the smallest of things and more recently, my personal battle with Depression and bipolar disorder.

Often, I have debated the need to change the name of the blog, since it does not slot itself neatly into a niche of parenting techniques all the time. Most posts can actually be applied to any relationship we may have in life and the principles are explored accordingly. It then occurred to me that the blog exists because of my daughter and that all of these lessons have been sharpened to a fine point because of my daily interaction with her. And so, the name stays.

In May 2014, encouraged by the warm reception of a few fiction posts that I wrote on my first blog, I decided to launch a second one, The Moving Quill. This blog focuses on writing techniques, short stories, poetry and the occasional non-fictional narrative rendered in a creative way. Since I already had a blog on the BlogSpot domain, I decided I would give WordPress a try. To be honest, I have not been disappointed at all in that decision.

Launching a new blog was like a fresh learning experience. I honestly believe that the more we dedicate ourselves to the idea of learning, the more we can grow as individuals. The second we lapse into the complacency of �I know that�, then we lose the edge that we can gain as students. WordPress was very different to navigate, right from drafting posts to managing media file insertions. But perseverance is key. We all know the value of change. The only problem is when we shy away from change because we are so comfortably ensconced in our cocoon of familiarity.

Writing fiction also opened up new avenues of exploration. I discovered more sites with writing prompts, more writers with incredible wordplay and more dedicated readers who came to the blog for just fiction and not posts on parenting. So, as can be inferred, my audience base is different for each blog, but equally important. So, the key to successful blogging, in my opinion is three-fold:

1. Write engaging content

2. Know your Audience

3. Be ready to learn on the move

In all of this, remember that Blogging or writing is a continuously evolving scene. Most important though, it helps you do what you love.
